Background
Concentric was retained as the Prime Structural Designer for a railway load-out expansion to an existing grain handling facility.
Approach & Methodology
Recognizing the need to maintain operational functionality as long as possible, Concentric met with the contractor on-site to evaluate the feasibility of various design concepts. The close working relationship with the contractor ensured a smooth transition from concept to design to the production of final detailed design drawings.
Key Challenges
In order to expand the rail capacity from one line to three, the support columns for the existing structure had to be removed. Concentric devised a creative plan that would allow installation of the new structure without the use of traditional shoring methods. The result was a seamless transfer of load between the two structures in a streamlined construction process. Other significant geometrical challenges were overcome throughout the structure in order to ensure the smooth operation of retractable stairs, spouts, and provide viewing access from the remote office.
